The Chinese carved bronze password padlock has five rotating discs made of bronze with four Chinese characters on each disc as follows:
“锄禾日当午,汗滴禾下土 。谁知盘中餐,粒粒皆辛苦。
Each line is part of a poem written 1400 years ago about Peasants working in the rice fields and each grain of rice is precious. The title of the poem is “A Hard-Working Farmer” Li Shen (772-846 AD)
Farmers weeding at noon,
Sweat down the field soon.
Who knows food on a tray
Due to their tolling day?
(*Note: Close Translation but I don’t speak Mandarin)
You can turn the discs easily, but if you want to open this lock you have to rotate the characters “锄禾日当午” in a line. Not a lock to secure your belonging because it is a very popular Chinese Poem. Easy to open even if you don’t know Chinese.
Both side of the lock are jointed with a carved head of lion. The padlock is made of Bronze, an alloy, made of red copper, tin and lead.
The most common decorations on padlocks was animals from the Chinese Zodiac , such as tiger, dragon, deer, sheep, ox, etc. In Western Zhou dynasty, dragon symbol for the mens locks and phoenix for women locks were mostly used. I have a large collection of Antique Locks, Padlocks, Keys, lock picks and Handcuffs so I will make a few more Blogs and video about them. Send me any pics of old locks, keys and handcuffs mrprolock@gmail.com

Locked out? Need Keys? Keys locked in your car? or worst, keys locked in the trunk?
When I passed my drivers license (one day after I turned 16yrs old) and I could now, after school and weekends, do emergency mobile locksmith service. My favorite locksmith job was “keys locked in car.” I could open any car with a homemade long piece of banding steel (later I bought a “Slim Jim”) and a coat hanger with a Sheperd’s hook bent on one end. I later updated my coat hanger to a chrome coat hanger (people got upset when I just used a plain coat hanger).
I could open any car in less than 60 seconds. Today with modern cars with anti-theft devices, air bags in the door, pick resistant locks I have a large car opening kit filled with air wedges, long reach tools that glow in the dark, bendable tools with hooks and lasso and a computer program to help me open the harder cars. Also, I have specialized lock picks to open pick resistant locks (BMW, Lexus, etc.).
Note: Tennis balls blowing air into the keyhole will not open any car (fun stunt on Youtube).

The top ten list identifying the Fraudulent and Unlicensed Locksmiths was developed jointly by the BBB, BC Consumer Protection and the BC Crime Prevention Association.
BBB ”Consumers reported “local locksmiths” advertising online using a local telephone number and local address, but when contacted, consumers are connected to a call centre in another city.
Consumers who have hired these companies allege they have been overcharged for products and services, received bad advice or poor workmanship, or have had difficulty contacting the business to correct problems.
BBB stated “Fraudulent locksmiths: Florida-based locksmiths posing as local firms have been overcharging for poor workmanship and bad advice and have left consumers with no avenue for redress. Locksmith Master and Locksmith Pros are two operating locally.”
AVOID FRAUD, DON’T BE A VICTIM: Don’t just pick the first “local” company you find online. Most of the Google “Paid Ads” are unlicensed locksmiths. Confirm the company address and ask for the legal name of the business. When the locksmith arrives, ask for identification, a business card and their BC Security Employee license. All reputable companies will take Visa or MasterCard if they insist on cash only beware.
I was contacted by a lady yesterday who said she was a victim of a Unlicensed Locksmith company she found on Google Ad Words in Downtown Vancouver who wanted to charge her over $300 to replace a mailbox lock she had lost the keys to. She paid the two “scuffy looking men” $160 cash and still has no keys to her mailbox.
Note: We charge only $95 + HST (8am to 8pm / 7 days) to pick open and replace the mailbox lock and we supply 2-3 keys.
We are a family run BC Licensed Locksmith Company (B4227) and is a 24 Hr. Emergency Mobile locksmith specializing in lock rekeys, lock outs, high security deadbolt installation and are experts in picking locks (except UL Listed Pick Resistant Locks eg Schlage Primus, Medeco, ASSA). Also, visit our locksmith store at SFU Harbour Centre at 555 W Hastings. (Monday to Saturday 10am to 6pm).
Next Week: What is the BC Security Agency who license locksmiths doing about the rash of unlicensed locksmiths operating daily in Downtown Vancouver, Vancouver and the Lower Mainland?

This morning I had another person call me about being a victim of an unlicensed locksmith in Vancouver. He had searched for “Locksmith Vancouver” on Google. He contacted the top three locksmith companies on Google Ad Words and one of these companies visited his home and rekeyed his lock and charged him over $500.00 and he paid cash.
Note: Mr. Locksmith charges $95.00 to rekey 1-2 locks and our customers get 5 free keys.
He now has been calling the company he had contacted and they refuse to talk to him. He called me and asked me what he can do.
Lots of Unlicensed Locksmiths in the Vancouver Area and other Cities in North America. He could have visited the BC Government website.
“Verify Locksmith Security Business licence” at the following BC Government site:
He could also write a letter to Registrar, Security Services ( http://www.pssg.gov.bc.ca/securityindustry)
When you Google “Locksmith Vancouver” the top three listings on Google Ad Words are unlicensed locksmiths. It is difficult for legitimate locksmiths to pay the Google Ad Word rates to be listed on the top of Google Ad Words. At Mr. Locksmith all of our locksmith have had Criminal records checks, have BC Government issued locksmith employee licenses and Mr. Locksmith had paid the fees to have a BC Government issued company locksmith license and Mr. Locksmith has the required liability insurance required by the BC Government.
The business model for the unlicensed locksmiths on Google Ad Words is to target emergency lock outs, quote low and then charge hundreds of dollars for simple jobs. Also, the unlicensed locksmiths will drill the lock or door because they don’t have the skills or training to pick the lock. I was called out to a car lockout where the un licensed locksmith tired to drill a car door open.
In the Province of British Columbia Locksmiths and Locksmith companies are required by law to have a British Columbia Provincial Locksmith License and have a minimum of two (2) years locksmith training and supervision under a licensed locksmith. The BC Locksmith License requires a security check and clearance and includes a fingerprint check at the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) or local Police Department. In British Columbia the Industry Training Authority (ITA) is responsible for apprentice locksmiths and certification as a qualified locksmith. The ITA verifies the locksmith has a minimum of two (2) years training under the supervision of BC Licensed and Qualified Locksmith,
However, the lack of a BC Locksmith License and criminal records check and security clearance has not deterred unlicensed locksmiths operating in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland,
Many of these unlicensed locksmith companies operating in Vancouver are based in Vancouver and the US. In the summer of 2010 the BC Government revoked a person in Vancouver who had a security guard license and was and was operating as an unliceded locksmith and he is still operating as an unlicensed locksmith in Vancouver. Also, this unlicensed locksmith and unlicensed locksmith company is advertising on Google Ad Words and is at the top of Google Ad Words.
I spoke with a representative from the Solicitor General office about the unlicensed locksmiths and this particular person and unlicensed company and he basically admitted they do not have the money or time to pursue unlicensed locksmiths and unlicensed locksmith companies operating openly in British Columbia. I will try to interview someone from their office for an “official response.”
I will report in a future Blog what the BC Government is doing about unlicensed locksmiths and Googles response to BC Unlicensed locksmiths advertising on Google Ad words.
In my opinion the only way to for people to people to get any satisfaction is to Fight the Unlicensed Locksmiths the only place they get business.
On Google Ad Words:
1- Google “Locksmith Vancouver” or “Locksmith” or “Locksmith Richmond” etc,
2- Click on the top three locksmiths at the top of the page.
3- Go to the unlicensed locksmith website and click on a few pages.

I (Terry Whin-Yates) will be at the Professional Lock Picking Contest at the PNE Prize Home attempting to pick open the Weiser Smart Lock in Vancouver, British Columbia on Tuesday night July 26, 2011.
Weiser Lock is sponsoring a “Professional Lock Picking Contest” and Terry and a few others have received an invitation to attend the Lock Picking contest.
This should be an interesting contest because I and locksmiths at Mr. Locksmith and our sister company Mr. Prolock open Weiser Locks and the new Smart Key Locks almost everyday 24/7. The lock can usually be opened in seconds with no sign of entry.
Lets see if the lock has been updated to prevent the lock from being “picked.”
I will update this BLOG later tonight with the results of the Professional Lock Picking Contest with the PNE Prize Home in Vancouver British Columbia.

The Science Council of B.C. has given an innovative SFU high-tech spin-off company a $200,000 Technology B.C. grant toward its efforts to help fight crime.
Crime Prevention Analysis Lab (CPAL) Inc., which grew from the pioneering work of SFU environmental criminologists Paul and Patricia Brantingham, conducts research and development on analytical systems for the purposes of crime pattern analysis. It’s the second time the company has received a $200,000 Technology B.C. grant.
CPAL Inc. will soon release its product, a software package called crimepatterns.com, to law enforcement agencies across the country. The software applies geographic mapping to crime scenes to detect patterns in serial criminals’ behaviour.
The first module focuses on auto theft and is about to be tested by Burnaby RCMP. Follow-up modules on break and enter, robbery and arson are planned. The company is preparing to market its auto-theft module this summer.
“We’re excited by the funding and the fast pace this is taking off,” says Terry Whin-Yates (left), president and CEO of CPAL Inc, and a graduate student in the school of criminology. He developed the idea of mapping the location of crimes while studying under the Brantinghams.
The company, based at SFU’s Discovery Park, was formed in 1999 and currently employs seven.
“The underlying concept is that crime is not random,” says Whin-Yates. In the case of auto crime, the system allows investigators to determine patterns between where vehicles are being stolen and recovered, what type of vehicles are being targeted and what vehicles appeal to a particular thief.
They can then call up data on possible suspects and see whether they live in proximity to the crime, which is common among auto thieves, as well as their methods of criminal behaviour — with amazing speed.
“The most probable criminals in this type of theft are repeat offenders,” says Whin-Yates. “The data is there. But it has never been pooled in this way.”
The software may not reduce the manpower necessary to fight crime but it can substantially help to focus the resources, he says.
While the company has also been successful in securing private funding, Whin-Yates says its fund-raising efforts will continue in the hopes of hiring more staff.
Researchers in SFU’s crime prevention analysis lab, run by the Brantinghams, continue to develop, collect and analyse comprehensive criminal justice-related information from police and government — data and models that helped set the stage for CPAL Inc.
Fraud Alert: Unlicensed & Unqualified Locksmiths Operating in Vancouver
Our security License number is B4227. You must ask for the license of your locksmith and input it into this government webpage to make sure it’s valid before you deal with them, or you could be getting ripped off!
Know Your Locksmith
At Mr. Prolock Professional Locksmiths we know that calling a locksmith can be a stressful situation. You might have just had your house broken into, a potentially shady individual might have had access to your keys, or you might be locked out of your home. So how do you know that when you call a locksmith, you are going to be serviced by someone you can trust?
This Mr. Prolock Blog is response to a slew of questions we have been receiving. Currently, in the United States, there is a big problem with scammer locksmiths who have been taking advantage of customers in an emergency situation: an individual might be locked out of their house and have no way back in without the help of a locksmith, whom after quoting low will charges hundreds of dollars or more! But we thought that was just in the States.
Locally, Mr. Prolock has been repeatedly dealing with certain Vancouver locksmiths who show up to rekey a house (simple enough), but wind up telling the client that all the locks in the house need to be replaced. While it is true that locks get old, fall into disarray and may or may not need to be replaced, some locksmiths will take advantage of an unsuspecting client in need.
If you have any doubts, get a second opinion. Call around. Mr. Prolock Professtional Locksmiths will be more than happy to answer all your questions (over the phone) that you might have about your buildings security. We always offer an estimate, and we always ask about your current security setup (i.e. what type of lock, what type of key). Most of the Scammer locksmiths cannot answer simple key and lock questions over the phone.
There are locksmith companies servicing the downtown area with less than one year’s experience and no BC Security License. One of these unqualified locksmiths had a security guard license and the BC Government revoked his Security employee lic (more on this in a future Blog). An inexperienced locksmith does not know keys, keyways or basic or High Security Locks. When they show up to your house and find an unfamiliar lock, they tell their client that everything needs to be replaced, costing hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars extra. These inexperienced and unprofessional locksmiths do not even have a Keymachine or Code Cutter, thus they have been using recycled keys. This is a huge ethical security risk when you think about how many locks they must change in a day, using the keys from the previous job, to become the key into your door, and replacing any lock that doesn’t match their limited knowledge of keyways.
Here are a couple videos about scammer locksmiths
Mr. Prolock is a fourth generation, family owned and operated business. We have the accumulated knowledge of over fifty years. We work with the police, we work in the prisons, we offer training courses, and we service an area near you. So it is important to know your locksmith. Give them a call, chat on the phone, and develop a rapport.
Protect yourself, you can “Verify Locksmith Security Business licence” at the following BC Government site:
Also, you can file a complaint to the Registrar of Security Programs and Police Division. The complaint process can be used to report unlicensed companies and locksmiths.

Mr. Prolock Professional Rekeying or Changing Locks (House, Condo or Business)
At Mr. Prolock Professional Locksmiths I get several emergency calls from customers in Vancouver and Downtown Vancouver who need their locks rekeyed or changed asap. Sometimes they have just lost their keys or someone has a key to their House, Apartment or Condo and they need the locks rekeyed. One emergency call I did the other night in Burnaby was the customer had come home from work and left their keys in the lock after they opened the front door. They remembered leaving the keys in the deadbolt and in less than 15 minutes someone had taken the keys. Also, on sunny days in Vancouver while women are at the coffee shop having a coffee with friends we get a rash of calls to rekey locks after their purses have been stolen from the backs of their seats or from underneath the table. The worst theft of purse several weeks ago was a woman was in the restroom and a theft reached under the stall and grabbed her purse. When a purse is stolen not only does it have the house and car keys but also the owners identification with their address.
Most people who call us at Mr. Prolock Locksmiths think they need new locks. However, most locks, key in knobs or deadbolts if they are in good condition can be rekeyed. Rekeying your locks is less expensive than replacing or changing your locks with new locks. Rekeying your existing locks will only take a few minutes per lock and the old keys will no longer open the lock. You should rekey your house or condo immediately when you move into your new place or business. You do not know who has keys.
Many Break & Enters we attend are a result of someone having a key and just opening the door. No sign of entry and usually no insurance coverage (check your insurance policies).
At 24 Hour Mr. Prolock Professional Locksmiths we only charge $95.00(+ tax) to rekey your regular house or business deadbolts locks or store front locks. Also, we supply you with Five (5) Free keys. *(1-2 Locks, $20 for each additional lock). Our Professional Locksmiths will rekey your locks 24hrs a day, 7 days a week servicing Vancouver, Downtown Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond, Tri-Cites (Port Moody, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam) and the North Shore (North Vancovuer & West Vancouver).
In future Mr. Prolock Blogs I will discuss the new customer rekeyable locks from Weiser and Kwikset and why you should not use these deadbolts for your house or condo (Note: Our locksmiths can open them in seconds). Also, it will not be long before the information is available on the internet for burglars and thieves to defeat (Break & Enter) these locks on your house.

Frozen Car Locks
When Vancouver and the Lower Mainland dip below freezing temperatures at Mr. Prolock Professional Locksmiths and our sister company AA Automotive Locksmiths we receive many calls from customers who are locked out of their cars because the car door lock is frozen.
So what do you do if your car door lock is frozen” Royce Whin-Yates (4th Generation Locksmith) states “do not pour hot water over your car door and car lock.” Royce said the best method to loosen up the frozen lock is using a spray “Lock De-icer.” Lock De-icer is available at most Automotive Stores and Canadian Tire.
No Lock De-icer? Hook up a blow dryer. If you don’t have a long enough extension cord try warming your key with a lighter (not too hot or you can melt some parts of the lock, a lot of plastic parts in modern car locks). Just heat the key up and put it into the lock, remove the key and reheat, keep doing this until the lock will eventually unfreeze and open. Note: If you do not have a lighter use you hands to warm the key.
Lubricate Your Car Locks:
During cold weather flush your car locks with WD40 to remove the moisture (do not use oil, this attracts dust and dirt and will eventually jam the lock).
Never try to force your door open. Cold plastic and metal become brittle and cold metal will break with very little force. We have had to open cars with a broken car door handle because the customer try to force open the door.
A very simple method is to try opening the passenger door or the cars hatch. However, most modern cars only have a drivers door lock and no passenger lock.
Hopefully these simple methods can help you. If you do call us at Mr. Prolock Professional Locksmiths to open your car we use a portable rechargeable hair dryer and Lock De-icer to open your frozen car door lock.

Steering Wheel Locks or Clubs Auto Theft Deterrent
I have said for years “Crime is Not Random, Don’t be a Victim”
At Mr. Prolock Professional Locksmith (www.mrprolock.com) in Vancouver, Burnaby and the Lower Mainland we remove Steering Wheel locks or Clubs from cars and trucks when the customer has lost their keys. We have the tools and training to remove the clubs without damaging the steering wheel or the interior of your vehicle 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by our Emergency Mobile Locksmiths.
Despite the risk of you losing your key to your steering wheel lock they are still a great deterrent to prevent the theft of your car. Even if your car has an alarm system, immobilizer or the car is equipped with transponder or chip key security system I highly recommend a club or steering wheel lock on your car.
During my investigations as a Forensic Locksmith (http://www.automotivelocksmiths.com/) for insurance companies I see very few cars that have been stolen or attempted to be stolen that had a club attached to the steering wheel. They are a good visible deterent. My experience has been for every one (1) car stolen nine (9) more cars the car thieves have attempted to steal the car, even the newer models and the car thieves have been unsuccessful.
Owners of newer cars with all the alarms, transponders and security bells and whistles and no steering wheel lock or club visible are being the victims of attempts to steal their cars. The car thieves do expensive damage to the ignition switch and are unable to steal the car because of the electronic vehicle theft deterrent systems. Royce Whin-Yates (4th Generation Locksmith) is our Automotive Locksmith Specialist and he repairs the damaged ignitions everyday of the week.
Bottom Line: Every time you leave your vehicle attach a steering wheel lock or club on your car, even the inexpensive $10 locks will deter most car thieves. Vancouver and the Lower Mainland has some of the highest theft of cars and trucks in the Western World.
In a future Blog I will talk about your house and how to prevent most Break & Enters (High Security Deadbolts, Mag Plates and Strikes, Vancouver Special).

A customer (Barb) was locked out of her condo Downtown Vancouver last night. It was an off shore manufactured Deadbolt and I picked it open very quick. Most of these inexpensive locks pick very easy and can be bumped open (vist my www.mrprolock for a bumping description) . She was shocked how easy the lock picked (I am a good lock picker but the cheap locks make me look good). Most of the locks in her building are the same cheap lock.
I recommended a Primus High Security Deadbolt that is UL listed as pick resistant (no lock is truly pick proof but I can’t pick it in the shop or on the road so I know it is good) and many other features, drill resistant and as follows:
Bump Proof
• Pick Resistant
• Drill Resistant
• UL (Underwriters Laboratories) Listed High Security Cylinders passed the UL 437 tests that measure effectiveness against picking, drilling and physical resistance.
• Solid brass collar spins under pressure to prevent wrench attacks.
• Large thumbturn provides ease of use for physically challenged.
• Steel shroud over bolt protects against “ice pick” type of attacks.
• High security strike plate has 2″ screws that anchor the strike directly to the building structure behind the frame, preventing “kick-in” type attacks.
• Hardened steel bolt and bolt throwing mechanism are surrounded by a heavy-gauge tubular steel housing for maximum resistance to crow bar attacks.
• Solid brass design is secured with high-tensile steel mounting bolts for maximum resistance against hammer and prying attacks.
• Available in brass or brushed aluminum finish.
• Patented Key control (key duplication by signature card only).
I highly recommend my “Vancouver Special” that includes a High Security Pick resistant lock (Primus High Security Deadbolt) and to target harden the door (Mag Plate) and Strike plate (installed on the frame of the door) to make the door harder to kick in.
Vancouver has some of the highest property crime and Break and Enters in Canada and North America. Don’t be a victim, “Crime is Not Random” and you can protect yourself and your property,
Call me anytime to arrange a “Vancouver Special” for your door and I can also install the “Vancouver Special” in Burnaby or anywhere in the Lower Mainland.

Don’t laugh, it happens to everyone sooner of later and it is very simple to open the locked bathroom door.
For a door that has a privacy lock (the kind with a hole in the knob on the outside), keep a tool handy that will open this door if it is locked by your toddler with you on the outside and your toddler on the inside. The tool can be made from a piece of coat hanger or a metal skewer from the kitchen drawer or the inside of a ballpoint pen. Kept handy, it could save you from considerable anxiety and frustration trying to get a toddler to unlock the door.
• Put tool straight into the hole in the knob.
• The tool will stop approximately 1 inch to 1½ inside the knob.
• Gently but firmly push the tool just a little bit, approximately ¼ inch (you are pushing the spring loaded release button).
• You should hear a “pop” or “clunk” as the lock unlocks.
• Turn handle.
Again, if the bathroom lock has a round hole take a wire coat hanger and bend it straight. Stick it directly in the hole (straight and level) and feel for a springy button… when you feel it, simply push and it should release the lock. If this is not successful, make sure the tool is level and is dead center, or call me for help.
This method works for 99 percent of the bathroom locks in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, however, I have been called out to open locked bathrooms that were broken and occasionally tI have seen bathroom locks that do not have the small hole in the center of the handle. We only charge $95 to open the locked bathroom door (7 days/8am to 8pm, and 24hr Emergency Locksmith Service is available.

Many unlicenced so called locksmiths in the Vancouver area. The BC Government has locksmith licence requirements for anyone advertising as locksmith, doing business as a locksmith or locksmith company. The minimum requirements are two (2) years experience working with a BC Lic Locksmith. Also, the Industry Training Authority (ITA) has minimum training requirements of two years working with a lic locksmith.
I have been in the Locksmith business for over 25 years and I have a BC Security Business Lic. (B4227).
Locksmithing SCAMS have been for years running throughout North America and have been in Vancouver for several years. They quote you over the phone $29.00 to open your locked door and then charge hundreds of dollars. Or they are unqualified and unlicenced.
You can protect yourself from these scammers by going to the BC Government website.
You can “Verify Locksmith Security Business licence” at the following BC Government site:

Does your Ford Focus ignition have one or more of the following problems:
- Difficulty in turning the key in the ignition.
- Sticking ignition.
- Key is dirty after removing or turning.
- Unable to remove the key.
- Key locked in a position.
- Key will no longer turn the ignition.

We replace your broken Ford Focus ignition with a quality replacement product from Strattec that is designed without the problem components. If you use the use other products they have the same design faults and the lock may fail again. Also, we key the lock to match your door locks so you don’t have to carry two keys for your car.
If your ignition is just starting to give you problems call us now to save money and headaches.
The cost for our mobile automotive locksmith to remove, rekey and replace the Ford Focus ignition is $225-$295 (+ tax).
